Director of Experiential Learning

The Director of Experiential Learning is responsible for the strategic development, implementation, and oversight of comprehensive experiential learning programs.  Under the division of Student Affairs but working highly in collaboration with Academic Affairs and other divisions as well as external stakeholders, this role supports the integration of internships, service-learning, financial education, and community-based learning experiences to advance student success.  This position supervises professional staff, manages program operations, and advances the mission of the Mays Center and Texas A&M University-San Antonio to leverage resources and relationships in order to develop students into career-ready and community-minded graduates.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Perform long and short-range planning necessary to ensure the ongoing development of comprehensive experiential learning programs, including internships, service-learning, project-based learning, and peer-led financial education. Supervise professional staff in order to achieve objectives.
  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships with local businesses, non-profit, and government organizations that lead to experiential learning opportunities locally, state-wide, nationally, and internationally for students. Develop and implement policies and processes to evaluate, post, and communicate experiential learning opportunities through university channels.
  • Advise faculty and staff on educational and operational components of experiential learning collaborations between Texas A&M University-San Antonio and key community partners. Actively partner with Academic Affairs to enhance professional development and training for faculty and enhancement and formal designation of experiential learning and service-learning courses.
  • Collaborate with team and colleagues to collect and analyze data to measure program outcomes and assessment; evaluate effectiveness of programs and recommend enhancements to align programs and services to university goals.
  • Partner with Mays Center staff on the integration of career readiness skills and understanding of the integrated role of community into experiential learning opportunities.
  • Advance financial education programs to promote student financial wellness and competency.

 

  • Oversee the comprehensive student record including cross-divisional collaborations to integrate track student experiences and equip students with the ability to articulate skills gained through various curricular and co-curricular activities.
  • Successfully represent the Mays Center in the office, classrooms, and community with a strong professional presence. Will be a liaison to faculty and departments at TAMUSA to support experiential learning and is responsible to stay up-to-date on research and current trends in experiential education.
  • Prepare and manage program budgets and monitor expenditures. Prepare reports and marketing materials to highlight programs and opportunities.

Minimum Requirements

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field
  • Ten years of related experience (minimum of five years in higher education)
  • Three years of supervisory experience

 

 

Preferred Education and Experience:

 

  • Master’s degree in applicable field (Counseling, Higher Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Public Administration, etc.)
  • D. or Ed.D. or terminal degree
  • Ten years of professional experience in higher education
  • Five years of supervisory experience.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with faculty, staff, students, alumni, administrators, employers, and community partners.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, and the ability to gather and analyze data, develop reports, multi-task, take initiative, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in the coordination of student learning activities, course development, and/or faculty training.
  • Knowledge of student development theories, high impact practices, and learning outcomes

 

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Supervision of Others

 

Will manage professional staff and student employees to accomplish tasks.

 

Other Requirements

 

  • Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.
